Tranquility

Tranquility, originally uploaded by johnnyringo82.

One of the absolutely stunning and picturesque views over Kunming Lake at the Summer Palace in north west Beijing.

Summer Palace

Although this might come across as a little 'Lonely-Planetish'...I have to tell you all a little about the in's and out's of Summer Palace.

I went on a Saturday afternoon in mid-June. Great weather. Loads of Chinese tourists. Before I paid my enterance fee (30 or 40 quay) at the gate - I was asked by a Chinese Local if I needed a tour guide. I kindly declined and went on my way.

I felt comfortable having my camera out and taking shots of anything and everything because I was also surrounded by Chinese tourists doing the same. The one thing that began to bug me as the day went on is that it was difficult to take photos without having a tourist or pass-er-by getting in the way of my pictures.

It's great to come here with a group of friends, but if you are truly looking to relax and have a day to yourself - this is the perfect place. Come on a weekday with some snacks, water and a book in your backpack, walk out across the 17 Arch Bridge to the island and enjoy an afternoon in the sun reading your book.

I spent my Saturday afternoon doing this and overlooking the Long Corridor and Longevity Hill.

So, if you're ever in Beijing and would like to take a full day (yes, it takes a full day because travel each way is about one hour from the Forbidden City) for yourself or even with a friend...definitely make sure to check out the Summer Palace.

Highlights of Summer Palace: The mable boat (they don't allow people on it anymore, but the sight itself is incredible), walk down the Long Corridor and cross the 17 Arch Bridge to the island.

Bon Voyage!
